Elderly care

In Japan, the problem of a growing elderly population is a lot worse than here. Because of that, there is a lot more research in assisting the elderly.

Twendy One is a robot that aims to help elderly people remain at home longer. By aiding them in tasks they can not do by themselves any more, the autonomy of these people can be greatly improved.

An other example of an assisting robot is Robovie II. This robot helps you doing grocery shopping

These robots can help the elderly stay at home longer. But it might also remove a part of the human contact they otherwise would have.

Do you think staying independent for longer outweighs the potential of decreasing the human contact people could have?

Elderly caring is also a problem in China now. In my opinion, I won’t leave my parents to robots. Robots can assist a lot but can’t replace people. Actually, older people need more care in psychological area than just in physical aspect.

I think here the fact of combining solutions is very good. Robots will be a good solution for this but there has to be an equilibrium between using robots to be independent and human help. If you give a robot to your grand parents for go shopping it is great, but if that implies that you are not going to visit them anymore of course it is bad. In that sense I do not think there is a black or white answer for this.

I agree with both of you. Mental health of elderly people is greatly determined by the amount of human interaction they have in my opinion. To increase the quality of life of the elder a robot that communicates with them and keeps them occupied might also a good idea.

I agree that the robots can do some of the help but they are not good enough to replace a human being for the moment. Maybe in the future when more research is done, the robot will become more en more important

It’s great that they can help the elderly. But i do not think it is a good idea to fully replace human beings by robots. In my opinion people need interaction with other human beings, otherwise you become a robot yourself! 😉

I agree, robots can not replace people in all day life. Interaction between friends and family members is necesarry. But there are still people who leave their parents alone, when they become elder. For them this kind of robots can be interesting.
